Thermodynamics of Learning Physical Phenomena

چکیده
Abstract Thermodynamics could be seen as an expression of physics at a high epistemic level. As such, its potential inductive bias to help machine learning procedures attain accurate and credible predictions has been recently realized in many fields. We review how thermodynamics provides helpful insights the process. At same time, we study influence aspects such scale which given phenomenon is described, choice relevant variables for this description or different techniques available

Thermodynamics of Surface Phenomena
The thermodynamic treatment of the interfacial region corresponding to two fluid phases in contact is discussed. The features of this analysis which are reviewed include the classical treatment of Gibbs and the extensions to this treatment which are due to Buff. It is shown that these extensions are essential if the logical structure of the analysis is to be regarded as complete.

Fifty years ago, the optimization of thermoelectric devices was analyzed by considering the relation between optimal performances and local entropy production. Entropy is produced by the irreversible processes in thermoelectric devices. If these processes could be eliminated, entropy production would be reduced to zero, and the limiting Carnot efficiency or coefficient of performance would be o...

متن کاملConcerning the Applicability of Thermodynamics to the Phenomena of Life
It was established by Boltzmann that the second law of thermodynamics is essentially a law of statistical probability, the validity of which depends on the existence of a verylarge number of individuals or units. The equilibrium state of a physicochemical system as defined by thermodynamical laws is simply the most probable state, towards which the system tends on the average but from which it ...
متن کاملCan Mathematics Explain Physical Phenomena?
Batterman ([2010]) raises a number of concerns for the inferential conception of the applicability of mathematics advocated by Bueno and Colyvan ([2011]). Here, we distinguish the various concerns, and indicate how they can be assuaged by paying attention to the nature of the mappings involved and emphasizing the significance of interpretation in this context. We also indicate how this concepti...
